riding, in order to be easily seen. Wear
special reflective clothing, such as
retro-reflective vests,
jackets, wristbands and
patches for your back,
legs, arms and helmet.
Install bike reflectors
on both the front and
back of your bicycle. A
flashing red light on
the rear of the bicycle,
backpack, or helmet
will also increase your
visibility.
Stay Focused
and Alert
Always look for
obstacles in your path,
such as potholes,
cracks, puddles, wet
leaves, loose gravel
and dogs. Be aware of
traffic around you. Ride
defensively.
Share the Road
Ride in the bike/buggy lane if
available. If riding in the travel lane,
ride to the right. Use bells, horns, or
your voice to alert pedestrians and
bicyclists that you are approaching or
passing.
Learn and Follow the
Rules of the Road
Always ride with traffic and obey
traffic lights, signs, speed limits and
lane markings. Know your traffic laws
found in the State of Indiana Drivers’
Manual. Signal in advance of a turn;
use correct hand signals so others can
anticipate your actions. According to
Indiana law 9-21-11-7 Sec. 8, A person may not ride a bicycle unless it is
equipped with a bell or other device
capable of giving a signal audible for a
distance of at least one hundred feet. A
bicycle may not be equipped with and
a person may not use upon a bicycle a
siren or whistle.
