Bicycle Safety Tips The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued some simple guidelines for safe bicycling. Protect Your Head. Wear a Helmet. Everyone, no matter what age, should wear a bicycle helmet. According to the NHTSA, helmets have been proven to be 85 to 88 percent effective in preventing traumatic brain injury, the primary cause of death and disabling injuries resulting from cycling crashes. When choosing a helmet, make sure to check for the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) label inside the helmet. Also, make sure that you select a helmet that fits properly.
