LaGrange County Council Update

The LaGrange County Council
opened the March meeting with a
moment of silence for the passing of
Dorothy “Dotty” Calhoun, the long
time secretary for the Surveyor.
County Prosecutor Jeff Wible
reported back that his investigation
to find funds from Homeland Grants
for the funding of the bullet proof
glass at the Jail and Prosecutors Office
had been unsuccessful. He requested
that the project be funded with funds
from the Infraction Deferral Fund. The
council approved the request.
Sheriff Terry Martin presented
the 2011 Jail Report and he requested
a change in submission of the budgets for the Jail and the Sheriff Departments. Presently, these are two
separate budgets and the Sheriff would
like to have these two combined into
one budget. After the discussion, the
Council approved the request.
County Recorder Sharon Schiltz
requested that the Council delete the
line item of Deputy and to add the line
item of Chief Deputy in her budget. The
Council removed the Chief Deputy and
replaced it with Deputy at the budget
time in 2011 for the 2012 budget year.
There was a lengthy discussion on the
reasons for this change and the effects
it would have in both the functionality
and financial impact of the recorder’s
office. After the discussion there was
a motion to not make the change, this
motion failed due to no second. The
chair then asked if there was a motion to approve this request. After no
motion was offered the Chair declared
that the request failed.
Soil and Water Conservation District Manager Donna Hunter presented
to the council, new job descriptions.
Donna is retiring and in an effort to
save money the District is going to
reassign her duties. In so doing, this
changed the job descriptions for the
four remaining job titles. Donna retired on March 30 after many years of
service to LaGrange County. We want

and wish her well in her retirement.
County Highway Superintendent
Jeff Brill presented to the council the
data received on the replacement of
two trucks. The plan is to replace one
