The Shipshewana Table Tennis League recently completed another successful season of league play during the months of January and February. Over fifty players met each Tuesday evening at the ShipshewanaScott Elementary gymnasium for hours of competitive play. This year, players and fans were treated to a special appearance from 2008 Olympic Coach Dan Seemiller and three of his nationally ranked junior players. The league saw many new players this year, both young and old. A double-elimination tournament was held on March 15 where Ken Borkholder once again won the Advanced Division (Group 1) bracket Gary Zehr Named SRMA Director The Shipshewana Retail Merchant’s Association board has announced a leadership change with the resignation of Lora Tormanen as Director. They have asked Gary Zehr to serve in the capacity of interim director for a period of one year. This will be a part time paid position and he will be responsible to give day to day direction to the SRMA and help assess the needs and gifts needed in the future of the organization. Gary began his duties on March 1, 2011. Gary has stepped down as president of the SRMA board and accepted the position. The board has reorganized and elected the following: Kevin Lambright, President; Levi King, Vice President; and Judy Yoder, Secretary; Gary Dunker, Treasurer. Staff Changes Long term High School Spanish substitute Monica Beiler resigned. Connie Steinman’s health leave at Topeka was extended. Wendy Stump was approved for maternity leave at Meadowview. Barbara Fought, assistant at Westview Elementary will be retiring. She will be replaced by Carolyn Miller. In sports, John Zehr is retiring from coaching tennis, Tara Miller is being hired for that position. Matt Handshoe was approved as boys golf assistant. Alejandro Marin was approved as a volunteer for boys track; Tom Fitch for girls track. Parents Renee Christner and Sherrie Davis have children participating in junior high gymnastics through Lakeland. They will be named as Westview volunteer coaches at no cost to the school. Seth Reffet was approved as an assistant to the FFA program. by beating newcomer LaVern Yoder. The league was sponsored by Yoder’s Shipshewana Hardware. Below are the results of the rest of the tourney: Group 1: 1st place Ken Borkholder, 2nd place LaVern Yoder, and 3rd place Ben Gingerich. Group 2: 1st place Jay Lehman, 2nd place Elmer Yoder, and 3rd place Aaron Miller.
