in the release, Mayor Stephen
DiDonato said receiving the honor
from the American Water Works
Association New Jersey under-
scores the town’s progress in its
water management practices over
recent years.
“We have made significant
strides in managing our effluent
water, as well as promoting water
conservation with innovative pro-
grams and ongoing education in
our community,” DiDonato said in
the release.
Councilman Steven Furgione,
who is chairman of council’s water
and sewer committee, said receiv-
ing the New Jersey One Water
Award reaffirms the town’s dedi-
cated efforts in water resource
management.
“it’s a great honor for the town
to receive. We spend a lot of time,
a lot of money and a lot of energy
on water conservation, as well as
trying to dispose of our treated ef-
fluent,” Furgione said in an inter-
view of The Gazette.
Furgione added that the town is
hopeful it receiving the award will
open the door for potential grant
opportunities in the future.
Both DiDonato and Furgione
complimented the people who
work on the town’s water issues.
“This award is a wonderful
honor for the town of Hammonton
and the environmental efforts of
town council, the Water and Sewer
Committee of Council, the envi-
ronmental Commission and Green
Committee,” DiDonato said in the
release.
“This recognition and award is
in large part due to the efforts of
our team, Utility Superintendent
Anthony DeCicco, the Utility De-
partment Staff and our profession-
als,” Furgione said in the release.
The New Jersey One Water

ACuA announces
recycling changes
The Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA), in partnership with
its Materials Recycling Facility operator Republic Services, are making
changes to the Atlantic County recycling program. The ACUA handles
the town’s recycling.
The most notable change regards plas-
tics. Now, only No. 1 and No. 2 plastic
bottles, jugs and containers that have
necks smaller than their bases will be
accepted. examples include soda
bottles, detergent jugs, ketchup bot-
tles, and salad dressing containers.
These items should be clean and dry.
Lids and caps should be removed.
Other changes include no shredded
paper, no aerosol cans, no paint cans,
no pizza boxes and no wrapping or tissue
paper.
These changes reflect the “wish-list” of manu-
facturers who purchase recycled material. Much of this manufacturing
takes place in China where there has been a widespread crackdown on
contamination of recycling bales entering the country.
The growth of single-use plastics has also increased the number of
plastic items entering the recycling stream, and all plastics are not cre-
