HAMMONTON—On Novem-
ber 19, the Hammonton Parks and
Recreation Commission was
joined by Isabella Castiglioni of
the Pinelands Preservation Al-
liance and the Association of New
Jersey Environmental Commis-
sions.
She made a presentation about
the rain garden that is going to be
installed in the area near the Ham-
monton Canoe Club at Hammon-
ton Lake Park.
“What is a rain garden? It’s sim-
ply a garden that’s slightly de-
pressed. If there’s nice sandy soil
like there is here in Hammonton,
we don’t do anything to it, it’s
going to drain nicely. If it doesn’t
drain nicely then we usually fill it
in with sand, compost or a mix of
the two. It helps water infiltrate
into the ground so you’re getting
recharge on your aquifer. It helps
store and remove storm water
through infiltration, evaporation
and through the water being used
by the plants in the garden. It’s
going to decrease your risk of
flooding because we are taking it
from an area thats typically imper-
vious, so that water wouldn’t have
the chance to soak in. It helps to
stop the spread of pollutants.
Imagine the garden acting like a
sponge. It’s not only stopping he
storm water but its stopping the
pollution by sponging all that up,”
Castiglioni said.
Castiglioni went on to explain
that the area surrounding the
Canoe Club is the perfect demon-
stration area not only since it will
be able to capture storm water
straight from a hard surface but
because its a high traffic area as
well. She said she hoped many
people will be seeing the garden
and learning from it.
The Greater Hammonton Per-
maculture Club have formally put
into writing that they will be tend-
ing to the garden over the course
of the next five years and the
Parks and Recreation Commission
have chosen members James
Borda and Sam Rodio Jr. to over-
see their work.

“That’s based partially on the
fact that Rutgers has paid summer
interns that will be digging out the
rain garden for us, which is great
because they really know what
they’re doing. The digging out
will probably be mostly Rutgers
staff and students but then we al-
ways like to bring in volunteers
for the actual planting and of
course people from town would
always be welcomed,” Castiglioni
said.
