take Chorus i and 13 chose to take
accelerated Spanish i.
“Over the summer our teachers
wrote curriculum and the students
have been busy working to further
their talents in fine arts or foreign
language. as a school and com-
munity we value students who
learn and develop multiple lan-
guages. the students in [HMS
Spanish teacher] Mr. ayers’
classes are getting a head start
with their foreign language and if
they do well this year they will be
on pace to take Spanish ii at Ham-
monton High School next year …
as a school and community we
also value the fine and performing
arts. each year the middle school
band program seems to grow and
evolve. this year we have our
first-ever eighth grade band,”
Nolan said.
the band, comprised of 12
eighth grade students and led by
HMS music teacher Courtney
Daniels, was in attendance at the
meeting and performed a song en-
titled “toboggan run.”
Nolan then introduced students
from the recently-revived eighth
grade chorus, led by HHS alumna
and current HMS music teacher
Layne Cochran. the students,
who will be performing on the
Philadelphia Museum of art steps
during the 6aBC thanksgiving
Day Parade, sang two songs. ac-
cording to Nolan, both the band
and chorus are preparing for their
winter concert being held on
Wednesday, December 18 at 5:30
p.m. in the HHS Performing arts
Center.
“the Hammonton Middle
School field hockey team has
completed another undefeated
season, making it three seasons in
a row,” Nolan said, recognizing
members of the team and coaches
in attendance at the meeting.
according to Nolan, the HMS
field hockey team, in the last three
seasons, has accumulated 29 wins,
134 goals and just one goal scored
against them.
after a brief recess following
Nolan’s presentation, Mento ad-
dressed the board.
according to Mento, board of
education meetings, starting with
the November 14 meeting, will be
available to the public via the
same HHS Youtube channel
where viewers can also watch the
HHS daily morning announce-
ments.
Mento mentioned that next
year’s school calendar is currently
in the works.
“it’s a little different with Labor
Day being late and how Veterans
Day falls, so we’re working on
finding a happy medium with
starting school at the right time
and getting our kids out at the
right time as well … i also wanted
to talk about last week, our family
week. i heard some people en-
joyed it and some questioned the
reason for us not having school for
a week, and i just wanted to let
everyone know that contractually
we are obligated to give our 12-
month employees four days off in
a 10-day period [in November],”
Mento said.
Mento noted Hammonton
School District’s upcoming return
to the Cape atlantic League, of
which Hammonton was one of the
charter members.
“We believe it’s a better place
for us; the place where we truly
belong and we’re happy to be
back starting summer 2020,”
Mento said.
the meeting then turned to
committee reports.
in finance, board member Bar-
bara Berenato spoke of some up-
coming projects.
“We are ready for preliminary
design of the girls’ fieldhouse; a
maintenance/transportation office,
which we desperately need some-
thing like that. We’re also doing a
