HAMMONTON — Municipal Clerk Frank Zuber and the Public Works and Transportation Committee ( PWTC ) discussed their plans for the remainder of 2023 and early 2024 . The primary topics were the lowering of the lake ’ s water level and the 2023 road program at their Oct . 19 meeting at town hall .
One of the key items involves a gradual reduction of the lake ’ s water levels , followed by a subsequent return to normal levels . The purpose behind this action is to grant property owners an opportunity to clean the shoreline adjacent to their properties , thereby reducing organic debris in the lake area .
The committee proposed a specific timeline for this project , with the lake reaching its lowest point by Nov . 15 and a gradual restoration to normal levels by February . Town council , which is collaborating closely with the PWTC on this project , expressed no objections to this timeline and is keen on expediting the project ’ s completion .
Another important aspect of the lake project emphasized was debris being removed from the lake and the methods employed for its removal . During the discussion , the members primarily focused on debris such as leaves and branches . Certified Public Works Manager Scott Rivera proposed a practical solution for the proper disposal of this debris .
“ We can make accommodations either on 11th Street in Washington or at the landfill during the week . Bring it in instead of loading it on a truck and then dumping it on the ground somewhere ,” Rivera said , highlighting an eco-friendlier approach to disposal .
The committee intends to

maintain an ongoing campaign to remind the Hammonton community about the lake lowering project throughout the period between November 2023 and February 2024 .
Shifting their focus to the 2023 roads program , the members addressed the state of Peach Street , among the others that need restoration .
“ Peach Street , which has been done , is OK , it rides better , it looks better ,” Zuber said . “ It ’ s not perfect . It ’ s on a paved surface . Basically , all the roadways are done .”
He went on to mention that most of the roadways had already undergone restoration , with a few aspects like topsoil and patching up holes still requiring attention .
Additionally , the committee discussed the planned restoration of Myrtle Street . Zuber presented an estimate of approximately $ 75,000 for the project , covering the stretch from Route 206 to the road ’ s bend .
Zuber also outlined an option for addressing the narrowing of Myrtle Street near Route 206 , suggesting the installation of narrow roadway signs and a gradual widening of the road by a few feet .
With funds still available for road restorations , the PWTC considered the possibility of adding other roads to the program . They reached a consensus to obtain a price quote for the Myrtle Street project and base their decision on the remainder of the road program on the outcome of this evaluation .
“ We have about $ 172,000 . I believe there ’ s [$ 100,000 ]. And from the original 600,000 , we have [$ 128,000 ]. And an older ordinance we had $ 45,000 ,” Zuber said .
Mayor Stephen DiDonato expressed his desire to see the project completed within the year , emphasizing the importance of efficient execution . As the committee continues its work , the community can look forward to cleaner lakeshores and improved road conditions , all aimed at enhancing the quality of life in Hammonton .
The next PWTC meeting is scheduled for Nov . 16 at 2:30 p . m . at town hall .
