CLOCK , from Page 1 pected to take place sometime between 2017 and 2018 . The 1926 Seth Thomas Clock Company clock is a piece of Hammonton history , which makes it a fitting logo for the Hammonton Sesquicentennial ’ s advertisements .
“ There ’ s not many clocks like that left . It has been used since the early 1900s . I think in the location it is in , in front of town hall there , it ’ s just a part of Hammonton ’ s history and you don ’ t like to let go of your history ,” Hammonton Mayor Stephen DiDonato said .
The restoration is projected to cost between $ 84,000 and $ 115,000 , according to committee member and former town councilman Dan Bachalis . Bachalis said the committee has raised approximately $ 20,000 so far through various sesquicentennial community events .
DiDonato added that a considerable amount of money was raised through the sale of sesquicentennial advertisements for a local ad book and a better idea of how much more money is required for the restoration will be received once the sesquicentennial , and all of its corresponding events end .
“ They sold a ton of ads to the ad book and raised a lot of money . So , we ’ ll see what funds are left and then we ’ ll go from there and see what additional funds we have to raise . Hopefully , we can do that early next year and get it up and running next year ,” DiDonato said .
The approximately 90-day full restoration will include : new numbers and clock face covers , new

Officials : Restore the town clock

insulation to keep the clock waterproof , the removal of multiple coats of paint in order to reveal the original details of the clock , the replacement of iron pieces on the interior and exterior that have rotted , new wiring and the cleaning and re-lubrication of axels and gears inside the clock , according to Bachalis .
Despite the array of changes scheduled to take place on the clock , Bachalis and the committee are dedicated to making the restored clock “ as historically accurate ” and true to the original as possible .
“ One of the things we have to decide , and I think we ’ re pretty settled on , is doing a full , historically accurate restoration . The metal , the colors and that sort of thing … It ’ s an old clock , it ’ s got a lot of history connected to it here in Hammonton . We want to restore it as accurately as possible , given that we ’ re now in the 21st century ,” Bachalis said .
Bachalis said it ’ s likely that the clock will have to be sent away for the renovations to be made .
“ There ’ s a strong sentiment among various people in town that they ’ d like to see the clock not leave town , but we ’ re not so sure that that ’ s going to be possible and get the quality of restoration that we ’ re looking for ,” Bachalis said .
The committee has narrowed its selection of companies to perform the restoration down to a few , including The Verdin Company , located in Cincinnati , OH and Coastal Chime and Clock Co ., located in Cinnaminson , NJ .
If it is shipped away for restoration , a void will be temporarily caused by the loss of the local landmark , because it has been a historic and famous part of the downtown area for nearly a century . Hammonton resident and project supporter Arthur Orsi said he believes restoring the clock would make that part of town even better .
“ I just think it has some historic value to it . I think it just adds some culture to the town … I ’ m just very interested in that particular section of town ... I think if the clock were restored , it ’ d make that area look really , really nice and that ’ s why I ’ m interested in being on the clock project ,” Orsi said .
Bachalis said he hopes the town will continue to support the committee in their fundraising efforts going forward and help the clock continue to be one of Hammonton ’ s most-admired landmarks .
“[ The clock ] really hits a lot of people as one of the quintessential symbols of our town ; that ’ s why we use it as the centerpiece of the sesquicentennial logo . It just grabs people ,” Bachalis said .
