Prior to the official start of re-
cycling Central, a long line of cars
had already begun to file onto the
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel grounds
with trunks that were stocked with
boxes and bags full of paper. the
donations collected from each res-
ident and business whose materi-
als were shredded during the event
will be used to help the Hef facil-
itate its goal of distributing and ac-
quiring funds and other resources
for the Hammonton School Dis-
trict in order to boost the quality
of education for local students.
Hammonton Police Lt. Kevin
friel, Hef member and co-chair
of the committee that organized
this year’s recycling Central, said
the event has become a perennial
success because it allows residents
to simultaneously give back to
local public schools and to the en-
vironment by getting rid of their
own built-up clutter in an eco-
friendly manner.
“i believe every year it winds up
successful because we bring out
people from the community and
surrounding area to help to recycle
and keep the environment green
by shredding their documents.
also, it’s a great cause because the
donations for shredding go to fund
many programs that we have at
the schools,” friel said.
recycling Central also featured
several free collection stations that
were organized by local civic or-
ganizations, volunteer groups and
nonprofits. the atlantic County
Library’s Hammonton Branch
participated by collecting chil-
dren’s books, cook books, self-
help books, biographies and
novels. Librarian Kitty Ostrum
said it’s important to recycle as
many materials as possible in
today’s society, and participating
in an event like recycling Central
sets a precedent for future genera-
tions to follow.
