Prior to the official start of re- cycling Central, a long line of cars had already begun to file onto the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel grounds with trunks that were stocked with boxes and bags full of paper. the donations collected from each res- ident and business whose materi- als were shredded during the event will be used to help the Hef facil- itate its goal of distributing and ac- quiring funds and other resources for the Hammonton School Dis- trict in order to boost the quality of education for local students. Hammonton Police Lt. Kevin friel, Hef member and co-chair of the committee that organized this year’s recycling Central, said the event has become a perennial success because it allows residents to simultaneously give back to local public schools and to the en- vironment by getting rid of their own built-up clutter in an eco- friendly manner. “i believe every year it winds up successful because we bring out people from the community and surrounding area to help to recycle and keep the environment green by shredding their documents. also, it’s a great cause because the donations for shredding go to fund many programs that we have at the schools,” friel said. recycling Central also featured several free collection stations that were organized by local civic or- ganizations, volunteer groups and nonprofits. the atlantic County Library’s Hammonton Branch participated by collecting chil- dren’s books, cook books, self- help books, biographies and novels. Librarian Kitty Ostrum said it’s important to recycle as many materials as possible in today’s society, and participating in an event like recycling Central sets a precedent for future genera- tions to follow. “We’re running out of space to get rid of things.
