Everyone wants their street rebuilt, until it actually gets rebuilt, that is. Then they complain to everyone until it’s finished, and even after it’s finished. So it’s important for our elected officials to remind themselves that fixing a street like Grape Street is a losing proposition from the beginning. No one is happy with the condition the street is in now, few will be happy with the condition the street will be in during construction, and very few will be completely satisfied when it is completed. With so much negativity surrounding the project – coupled with the fact that the town will have to finance it and increase its debt load (grants are available but have not been secured, according to town officials) – it’s hard to find optimism about whether or not Grape Street will ever be completed. At The Gazette, we’re optimistic it will be completed, and here’s why: history. While this newspaper has written about the possibility of rebuilding Grape Street for more than 10 years, we have also written about many other streets in Hammonton that have been rebuilt, either through bonding, grant funding, or with county money because they were county roads.
