SPORTS , from Page 1 throughout town . rivalry games between the two teams in other sports still draw large , intense crowds .
What is it that makes Hammonton such a football-oriented town , on top of its general love of sports ?
“ that ’ s an easy question . Hammonton is a special place with hard-working , passionate people who love their town . and that ’ s the game of football . Both football teams represent the town and its grittiness . Both teams are hardworking and passionate . St . Joe and Hammonton are known for their toughness and willingness to outwork their opponent . Just like our town ,” St . Joseph assistant coach ricky Mauriello said . each week , Mauriello represents thousands of fans on the sidelines . Having the honor to coach in a town like Hammonton is not something that he or his fellow coaches take lightly .
“ it means everything to our coaches and me . Our coaches take pride in continuing our winning tradition and try to instill it in our player ’ s year in and year out . Our players take on the attitude we have . that ’ s why they are tough , because we are tough on them . and that will continue with them through life after high school . We don ’ t make much , if anything , in terms of a stipend to coach . We do it because we love our program , the kids and our school , and take pride in making sure we stay on top ,” Mauriello said . a four-year starter during his
high school career , Jonathan ryker knows firsthand just how footballobsessed Hammonton is .
“ i think football is so popular , especially in Hammonton , because of the fact that the town has two of the best football teams in South Jersey in it . it makes it that much easier to be able to go to Hammonton and watch a game on friday night and then wake up the next morning to see a St . Joe game ,” ryker said . Like Mauriello , ryker feels a sense of pride in representing his town and his school on the field every week .
“ everyone knows that most of the time , at least for the players , that the football season sets the tone for the rest of the school year . football is not one of those sports where you get to play four games in a week . You only get 10 or 11 games in the entire season if you ’ re lucky , so you always have to be prepared . there are no do-overs . Nobody wants to be that high school that can ’ t win a game and the bleachers are empty every friday night ,” ryker said .
Jonathan ryker had the chance to play for both the St . Joseph Wildcats and the Hammonton Blue Devils throughout his high school career , something not many people do .
“ Coach [ Paul ] Sacco and Coach Pete [ Lancetta ] are two of the best coaches ever . for coach [ Jim ] raso ’ s first year to be as great as it was is truly a blessing ,” ryker
