GREEN , from Page 1 natural systems and designs . it either allows runoff to filter through the ground and replenish clean water into underground aquifers , or seizes runoff for an advantageous use , such as irrigation .
New Jersey Future said it is working with three pilot towns to implement the Mainstreaming Green infrastructure program , one being Hammonton . the other two , byram and Newton , are located northwest in New Jersey ’ s Highlands . the pilot towns have each entered into a memorandum of understanding with New Jersey Future that describes the agenda and commitments both parties will make in order to meet the objectives of the program . rutgers Cooperative extension ’ s Water resources program will be assisting these towns by preparing customized green infrastructure plans that document all forms of impervious cover in each town and create action plans for feasible green infrastructure projects to reduce runoff and pollution , according to New Jersey Future .
New Jersey Future ’ s role in the program is to pull together local leaders , green infrastructure specialists , and nonprofit partners in the towns to begin to move forward with the program . the first step towards the Mainstreaming Green infrastructure program in Hammonton was the kick-off meeting on August 1 , which was led by Louise Currey Wilson and Kandyce Perry of New Jersey Future . Also in attendance were Chris Obropta and Hollie DiMuro of the rutgers Water resources program , Scott rivera of the town of Hammonton Department of Public Works , Public Works Manager / business Administrator Jerome barberio , John Keenan of Hammonton Lake Water Quality Advisory Committee , Jaclyn rhoads and richard bizub of Pinelands Preservation Alliance , Michael Sullivan of Clarke Caton Hintz , Councilmen Joseph Giralo and Michael Pullia , Angela Donio of environmental Commission , Michele Adams of Meliora Design and Wanda Switonska .
Wilson , a Green infrastructure Manager , and Perry , a Policy and Planning Associate , began the meeting with a status report on the Mainstreaming infrastructure project . Wilson listed the pros of green infrastructure and stated that New Jersey Future would bring forth the time and expertise of their consultants .
Next up was the longest section of the meeting , in which the town perspective on the program was to be heard . this section was led by barberio and Keenan .
“ i think it ’ s a great cause . As representative of the Lake Water Quality Advisory Committee , i would like to say that almost anything that could be done to promote green infrastructure is going to have a positive effect on lake water quality ,” Keenan said .
Keenan commented on the existing idea of a “ town square ” to be built in Hammonton , a concept also publicly referred to as a “ piazza .” He said that a possible idea would be incorporating green infrastructure into it . Wanda Switonska spoke up at this point about Hammonton ’ s

Green infrastructure , piazza discussed

need for a town square , and its relation to the matter at hand . She said , “ it seems like we can marry these ideas : a walk-able city and a clean city .”
Wilson brought up a discussion at a Creative Hammonton meeting about a central gathering place in town , and how she ’ d suggested that the ground of the town square act as a “ sponge .”
During the meeting , Angela Donio said she agreed with this idea of a town square made of permeable surface — wherever it is built — because it would limit the amount of unwanted substances going into the Hammonton Lake .
Switonska commented on the origin of the “ town square ” or “ piazza ” idea .
“[ MainStreet Hammonton executive Director ] Cassie iacovelli , she was really the idea-giver for the whole concept . What started her initiative was that she wanted to have a place that she could walk , she could jog ... As we kind of had a conversation during the Creative Hammonton meeting , different groups actually started to raise their voice and opinion , and it seems that place can marry so many needs ... it seems like that section of Central Avenue and meeting with bellevue Avenue was kind of the favorite spot ,” Switonska said during the meeting .
The Gazette proposed using the vacant ACe Hardware / Hammonton building Material Co . on egg Harbor road for the proposed “ town square ” or “ piazza ” instead of the Central Avenue location in an editorial in its July 27 edition .
Jerry barberio brought up the concerns with both the public and private aspects of the program . in the public aspect , he mentioned the issues of limited resources and employees not having the necessary background to work with green infrastructure , and his thought was that green infrastructure demonstrations would have to be as maintenance-free as possible . On the private side , he discussed that they ’ d have to hire the right company who would be willing to pay for landscaping and the upkeep of their demonstration .
