New pastor at Presbyterian Church

BY KRISTIN GUGLIETTI GAZETTE STAFF WRITER
HAMMONTON — After three years without a pastor , the Presbyterian Church finally has a new pastor on the pulpit .
Pastor Rachel Sutphin who is from Christiansburg , Virginia was previously a pastor for two years in Charlottesville , Virginia where she was one of three pastors with 1,100 church members .
She said there ’ s currently about 70 members at the Hammonton Presbyterian Church .
“ It ’ s a big difference coming here , but I felt ready to be a solo pastor , and wanted to do more preaching and pastoral care ,” Sutphin said .
During her time in Charlottesville , she loved being a pastor for children and youth but found herself missing being in pulpits so she started looking at other churches to be a solo pastor .
According to Sutphin the process to become a pastor at a Presbyterian church is similar to a dating website .
“ The Presbyterian process is a bit complicated . It ’ s kind of like a dating website . You submit a profile , and the church submits a profile and a computer system matches you ,” Sutphin said . During her search , she matched with Hammonton Presbyterian Church early on then she

She preached and then there was a congregational vote where she was unanimously chosen as the new pastor .
“ Throughout this process , I was really looking anywhere between Maine and Georgia , so having such a broad geographical region I was open to , I saw many different interesting churches and yet Hammonton stood out to me with how much they continue to keep up with the day-to-day but also grow during this period without a pastor ,”
