Being involved with sports usually triggers an interest in the Olympics. This is true for Hammonton Swim Club Vice President Jeff fusco. fusco is also heavily involved with the Hammonton Stingrays swim team.
“ i first took an interest in the Olympics in 1976. My Boy Scout troop camped in Canada the summer that they were held in Montreal. i also went to school with Carl Lewis in Willingboro. He is one of the most-decorated summer Olympians. My wife, Sandy, is from Delran, home town of Carli Lloyd. We have met her and attended a parade in her honor after her first Olympic medal. Our current Stingray Coach, Steff Wakefield, brought Olympic swimmer Lenny Krazelberg in to meet her swimmers and i when she worked at the JCC in Margate. She will be going to rio this year … Currently, one of our former swimmers, Kelsi Worrell, from the Tarnsfield team of the SSaSJ has qualified for the Olympic team for swimming. Kelsi has competed against our Hammonton Stingrays. She has swum at our pool here in Hammonton, and we have swum against the Torpedoes at their pool. i will definitely be watching and cheering for Kelsi and Carli this year,” fusco said.
Like fusco, Mayor Stephen Di- Donato is looking forward to this summer’ s games.
“ i always watch the summer and winter games. i look forward to both. i especially like the swimming events in the summer games. i’ m very excited for this year’ s games,” DiDonato said. also involved with local sports is Hammonton Youth Soccer association Vice President ian fisher, who said that although he likes team sports, he’ s not a huge Olympic viewer.
“ i do not usually watch the Olympics except for the team sports events. Never really been a big fan of the individual sports that take place in the Olympics, but i can appreciate what it takes to get to that level of competition. i will watch basketball and soccer. i am curious as to how many athletes that qualified do not go based on the concerns with the polluted water and fear of the zika virus,” fisher said.
On the other hand, some people aren’ t as interested in the Olympic games as others, no matter where they are held.
“ i don’ t usually watch the Olympics, and i probably won’ t watch any this year. i’ ve just never really be interested in them at all,” isabel Potter said. Part of the allure surrounding the Olympic games is the joining together of so many nations across the world. Of course, there are sports taking place year-round in countries across the world, but it is rare that they combine as a whole to compete with one another.
“ although i don’ t really plan to watch much Olympic coverage, i think any event that brings people together on a global level is great,” frank Maione said.
