Sidewalk discussion at July 6 planning board meeting

The board also adopted two resolutions from previous meetings . The first was from MMG Real Estate Holdings LLC . The second was a waiver of curb and sidewalk for Richard Walker . Before adjourning , Schroeder led a brief discussion about what the board should do going forward regarding curb and sidewalk waiver requests and why they should allow or not allow them to be waived .
“ The sidewalks should be built at the time of construction unless a good reason is given that the public interest is not served to allow that ,” Schroeder said .
He continued by telling the board that after speaking to a number of residents during the July 4 parade downtown , he discovered that a number of them walked from as many as 10 blocks away . He credited this to the development of curb and sidewalk throughout most of the downtown

H A M M O N T O N — C h i e f Robert Jones and the Hammonton Police Department announced their intention to use the full effects of a driving while under the influence ( DWI ) roadside checkpoint in the enforcement of intoxicated and / or impaired drivers on July 23 , according to a release issued by Officer Jason Rigby .
Police officers from the HPD in cooperation with the Atlantic County Prosecutor ’ s Office will use appropriate traffic control devices to facilitate roadside checkpoints in accordance with departmental police and law . Motorists traveling on or in the area of 325 South White Horse Pike will be asked to slow down and even stop during the course of this checkpoint . Police will make every effort to limit traffic delays . Motorists are asked to be patient and cooperate with these proactive measures . Our goal is to prevent motorists from driving while intoxicated or impaired due to alcohol and / or drugs , the release said . DWI Enforcement is partially funded by Drunken Driving Enforcement funds collected by the court system as well as funding provided by New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety , according to the release . The release said the aforementioned checkpoint will or may be operational on that date . The exact location , date and time may vary due to weather conditions at that time . However the checkpoint area will be highly visible at the time of operation .

Fringe Festival set for August 5-7

HAMMONTON — Eagle Theatre will be hosting the New Jersey Fringe Festival in downtown on August 5 to August 7 . The festival will feature 15 eclectic performances , all within walking distance of the festival ’ s hub and box office , Eagle Theatre .
“ A Fringe Festival is ‘ binge watching for live theatre lovers .’ We aim to encapsulate everything you could possibly theatrically desire and roll it into a one weekend celebration ... a Woodstock for the art scene ,” Ted Wioncek III , Eagle Theatre ’ s Co-Artistic Director , said .
Performances range from 25 to 75 minutes and are performed multiple times throughout the day . Festival goers can purchase wristbands in advance or day of the festival . Saturday Passes , Friday and Sunday Passes , and All Weekend Access passes are available .
“ We are hosting the hottest acts in the tristate area . Selections range from small musicals , to cutting edge original work , one-man / one-woman shows , puppetry , even a live cinematic 3D satire . There is just no limit to what Jersey Fringe will provide ,” Ed Corsi , Eagle Theatre Co-Artistic Director , said .
In addition , an outdoor festival atmosphere filled with street performers , musicians , interactive art experiences , food vendors and a craft beer and wine garden will line the streets . The planning board will hold their next meeting on July 20 at town hall .

Kramer Hall seeking agriculture memorabilia to celebrate Hammonton ’ s 150th

HAMMONTON — Stockton University Kramer Hall and the Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton have partnered with the South Jersey Culture and History Center and the town of Hammonton to host an exhibition focusing on the theme of agriculture in Hammonton as a part of the town ’ s Sesquicentennial . Kramer Hall and the Noyes are asking the community to consider sharing relevant historical items that they own which relate to any of the agriculture industries located in Hammonton . For example , items , documents or photographs might relate to farming , machinery , workers and the crop industries . There are some space and size limitations as to what can be accepted , so please contact Kramer Hall at 626-3837 to coordinate the display of larger items .

The exhibit will be open Aug . 15 through Dec . 31 at the Noyes Gallery at Kramer Hall with an opening reception on Thursday , Sept . 15 , from 6 - 8 p . m . as part of Hammonton ’ s Third Thursday activities .
This is the second exhibition focused on preserving Hammonton ’ s history . Currently on display until August 8 is a 150-year showcase of the local industry and progress highlighting garments , shoes , textiles , glass and more .

Q : What was the first hospital in Hammonton ?
A : Dr . Anthony L . Esposito purchased the home of Judge Richard Byrnes ( yes , that Richard Byrnes ) on Washington and 12th when Dr . Esposito returned to Hammonton in 1920 . He quickly founded a hospital , where his wife , the former Myrtle Seeds , a trained nurse , acted as supervisor of the facility . Prior to this , patients needing hospitalization were sent to Philadelphia . Others were treated at various doctors ’ offices and cared for at home . At the time , doctors regularly made house calls and saw their patients frequently , even daily .
