HAMMONtON—On July 8,
three days before the 142nd feast
of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel cele-
bration began, residents and mem-
bers of the Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel Society congregated out-
side of the society’s hall for a spe-
cial Mass in honor of another suc-
cessful feast Week, which was fol-
lowed by the dedication of the new
marble statue of Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel that will serve as the cor-
nerstone of the grounds where the
festival takes place each July.

the society that have come and

members who preserved the sanc-

helped maintain it as the proud tra-

the statue is not the first monu-
ment dedicated to Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel — there is also an Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel headstone lo-
cated on Pine road near the former
home of the celebration’s founder,
Antonio Capelli. However, Pan-
talone said the society felt it was
appropriate to install a monument
right where the sacred celebration
often referred to by locals as “the
carnival” takes place each year be-
cause it will serve as reminder of
the reason it is still being cele-
brated 142 years later.
