The summer lives of some local and area students
SUMMER , from Page 1 with my family and friends , traveling and getting as many beach days in as I can ,” Lacey DeMarco , 18 , of Hammonton , said .
DeMarco , like many local teens , plans to enjoy her summer while also making some extra money . She has been working at Brother ’ s Pizza in Hammonton since January and plans to continue working there in the summer .
“ It ’ s five minutes away from my house and a greatly run business with awesome owners that I ’ ve known since I was little ,” De- Marco , a senior at Hammonton High School , said .
Victoria Scibilia , 15 , of Hammonton , also plans to distribute her time between work and fun this summer .
“ I ’ m looking forward to hanging with friends and going to the beach this summer while also packing blueberries at Dan Franchetti Farms ,” Scibilia , a freshman at Hammonton High School , said .
For Paul Galletta , 15 , of Hammonton , work and fun are going to be synonymous this summer .
“ I ’ m most looking forward to work and make money . I have a job working on the farm , and it ’ s just the easiest way to get a job because it ’ s my family ’ s farm ,” Galletta , whose family owns Atlantic Blueberry Co ., said . Galletta is also a freshman at Hammonton High School .
Many teens are counting down the days until they finally get their license this summer and experience the freedom that comes along with being able to drive .
“ I ’ m looking forward to getting my license , hanging out with my friends and going to the beach this summer ,” Brock Mauriello , 16 , of Hammonton , said . Mauriello , a junior at Hammonton High School , said his summer job is cutting lawns with his dad .
Others , like Abbie Adirzone , 17 , of Hammonton , got their license during the school year and are excited to drive to the beach for the first time .
“ I ’ m looking forward to summer concerts with all my friends , being able to drive down to the shore and having as much fun as I can with all my friends before some of them leave for college and before my senior year ,” Adirzone , who plans to work at SOLID Training and babysit this summer , said . Adirzone is a junior at Hammonton High School .
For graduating high school seniors , the summer after high school can be a bittersweet time , as many are preparing to leave their friends and family and head off to college .
“ This summer , I ’ m looking forward to being able to be with all of my friends before everyone goes off on the next chapter in their lives at college ,” Tyler Oster , 18 ,
of Atco , said . Oster , a senior at Hammonton High School , is working as a delivery boy this summer for Sally Starr ’ s in Waterford Twp .
Working and saving up money during the summer seems to be just as important for local college students , such as Gary Marva , 19 , of Waterford Twp .
“ This summer , I ’ m working as a Customer Service Associate at Walgreen ’ s . I chose this job because there ’ s a Walgreen ’ s at my college , Rowan University , so I could work there during the school year , and then for the summer , I got transferred to one closer to here ,” Marva , who attends Rowan University , said . He said he is most looking forward to seeing his favorite band , Zac Brown Band , in concert this summer for the third time .
A break from a full college courseload allows students a physical and mental respite in which to focus on important things in their lives besides homework assignments and grades .
“ I ’ m looking forward to not having to worry about what assignments I have to do next for school and being able to spend my days hanging out with my friends , family , traveling and doing everything that I wasn ’ t able to fully do when I was focused on school . My family has a cottage that we ’ ll most likely go to where we can tube , kayak and do other fun outdoor things , and I ’ ll probably be at the beach a whole lot ,” Erin Rehmann , 18 , of Hammonton , said .
Rehmann , who attends Queen ’ s University , also plans to work at her family ’ s business “ doing secretarial stuff and working on some projects with some of the engineers .”
Peter Amendolia , 20 , of Hammonton , plans to fill his free time this summer with an adventure halfway across the globe .
“ I ’ m looking forward to going to study abroad in Italy , where I ’ ll be taking Intermediate Italian 2 and Works of the Italian Renaissance . I ’ ll be living at a University called Urbino outside of Florence . Right now , I ’ m working at ShopRite to save as much money as I can for the trip ,” Amendolia , who attends Rutgers University , said .
Summers for college students can be crucial times for holding internships and gaining experience toward a future desired job , which is exactly what many local college students plan to do this summer .
“ This summer , I ’ m working in a lab at Princeton on my senior thesis , which involves performing rat brain surgery to analyze the PPC , a cortex involved in short term memory . My hope is to apply my work to better understand Alzheimer ’ s Disease . When I ’ m not working in lab , I ’ m studying for the MCATs , which I ’ m taking at the end of the summer . Even though it ’ s definitely an academically rigorous summer for me , I ’ m studying what I love at a place I love ,” Lauren Berger , 21 , of Hammonton , said . Berger , who attends Princeton University , said she plans to split her weekends between visiting her family and friends in Hammonton and traveling to New York City to stay with friends .
Kellen Whitney , 21 , of Hammonton , is also using his summer to gain experience in the field he is studying in college .
“ I ’ m living down in Cape May with my uncle for the summer , and I look forward to getting to the beach on every day off that I have . This summer , I was hired as a Senior Nursing Aide at Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Courthouse . I was pretty excited to get this job because I ’ m a nursing major at TCNJ , and I ’ m hoping this will build and expand my knowledge about the field ,” Whitney , who attends The College of New Jersey , said .
Kelsey Peterson , 20 , of Hammonton , is a local college student preparing for post-college life this summer through an internship .
“ I am interning this summer for Burlington Stores as a corporate buyer for the jewelry department . I chose this internship because I am hoping to develop a career in the fashion industry someday . The internship is providing me with amazing opportunities to network as well as to travel to market in NYC once a week ,” Peterson , who also attends The College of New Jersey , said .
With long hours at her internship , Peterson , like countless other working high school and college students this summer , wants to be sure to find the time to enjoy herself on her break from school .
“ I work 40 hours a week , so I will be squeezing all of my fun summer plans into the weekends , which is when I plan to go to the beach with friends or work on my tan by my pool . Relaxation is key ,” Peterson said .
