Annual cancer walk held June 7 by Paul J. Macrie IV Gazette Staff Writer HaMMONtON—On June 7, the Hammonton Cancer foundation held its Second annual “Walk for Our Neighbors” cancer walk event called at the Hammonton Middle School. for the past several years, the event has helped raise funds to help area cancer patients with expenses. it was originally organized by the Hammonton Lions. Groups of people came out to support the great cause on a beautiful Saturday morning. there were groups that were representing cancer patients, survivors, or one’s that lost their lives to the battle. according to Hammonton (609) 561-1616 Cancer foundation President Dave Mauriello, the foundation has raised and donated more than $100,000 to benefit local patient cancers survivors. Last year, the foundation raised $18,000 for the cancer walk event. Kim forsman was walking with her daughter, Victoria and husband, Pentti at the event. forsman survived her bout with cancer 14 years ago. “this is my second year walking at the event. i think it shows support for the people in Hammonton who have had cancer, and it think it is a fantastic event. it brings everyone together,” forsman said. ann Monapella participated in the cancer walk event for the first time. She found out about the cause from her daughter who goes to Hammonton Middle School. “My daughter wanted to do it so i said ‘let’s do it.’ this event helps with the research and cure for cancer, and for those that have survived cancer. anytime we can support the community we will,” Monapella said. the Corson family, Bob, Peggy and Kristin were walking together to support the effort as well. it was Bob and Peggy’s first time, but their daughter, Kristin, has been involved since it started three years ago. “We couldn’t ask for better DiMeglio Septic, Est. 1975 ~ DEP 03261 ~ Paul DiMeglio Inc. 1 (800) 427-4617 ~ 561-1007 ~ 561-3597 491 S. Mauriello, along with frank italiano served as the dunk victims, as there were plenty of volunteers to put the two in the water-filled tank. there were other sources of entertainment such as face painting for kids. Student volunteers from St. augustine Prep and Hammonton High School also helped out at the event. refreshments and snacks were provided in the front of the middle school track area, and all the money raised will be donated to the South Jersey Cancer fund. Mauriello was satisfied with the two-hour event. He said they had almost 300 pre-registrations, and was pleased with the amount of people supporting the cause. “Our goal is to get more student- age population involved to get them more active in the community. the adults are always very supportive of what we do, especially with the multiple organizations that support it. Our objective is to get more kids involved in hopes of over the next 10 to 15 years they will continue to stay involved with the cause,” Mauriello said. it was a picture-perfect, latespring weather day, and Mauriello was thankful for it. He enjoyed being the dunk tank target and has been very happy with the money the foundation has been able to raise as well. “We are very pleased with that. the community has been very supportive. We’d like to have a day where there are 500-600 walkers to really, really bolster what our cause is. Other than that, the community is always supportive in what we do,” Mauriello said.
