mentioned that Stockton University is recommitting to weekly sampling in the summer and that they ’ re researching the coliform bacteria in the lake , which was shut down for swimming as it wasn ’ t meeting health safety standards to make it a worthwhile priority .
“ Even though returning the lake to swimming isn ’ t necessarily the highest priority on our to-do list at this point , we do want to get it to the point where that at least can become a question for discussion and decision making , so we want to get the E . coli under control ,” Bachalis said .
Bachalis noted that the lake can meet the health standards 75 to 80 percent of the time as he explained that E . coli only peaked to untenable levels after a rainstorm , stating that the levels go up a day or two after a rainstorm and then go back down within a couple of days . The committee ’ s hypothesis is that people are not picking up after their dogs as the stormwater drain lines are filled up .
Bachalis mentioned that Stockton University is also conducting a research to identify if the coliform bacteria in the lake is from which species . Stockton University is also looking to do a dedicated nitrate sampling to check pollution from lawns around the lake .

Bachalis also provided information on the vegetation summary of the lake , which contains bullhead lily ( spatterdock , bladderwort , yellow pond lily ), with the lily growing in shallow parts and some areas of the lake more impacted than others . Bachalis provided a timeline of the
