LAKE , from Page 1 Hammonton Canoe Club on May 9 . The meeting saw the committee give an update to each of their 2023 goals .
For the committee reports , Parks and Recreation Commission member Mica McCullough provided an update on the pickleball and tennis courts at Hammonton Middle School ( HMS ). There has been discussion regarding the tennis courts being resurfaced and painting lines for two pickleball courts per tennis court . An update was provided on lake spraying as Public Works Department Head Scott Rivera passed his certification and the permit to do the lake spraying was submitted . The spraying is temperature dependent and should happen late May or early June , according to McCullough .
In the Environmental Commission report , Chair Dan Bachalis provided an update on a spate of illegal tree removals being reported all over town . An incident revealed involved a resident on Central Avenue being denied a permit and removed two trees anyway , leading to the resident being reported , with more to be revealed at the Environmental Commission meeting . Removing trees without a permit can result in a fine of $ 1,000 per tree .
For the 2023 goal updates , the committee first discussed the goal regarding monitoring the lake herbicide application in conjunction with the aquatic herbicide research group . The committee discussed mechanical harvesting , where Bachalis mentioned member Bill Parkhurst giving him a copy of a 1983 lake management study , which Bachalis discussed in detail what the study revealed . The study talked about the lake quality and how the sediments create a giant nutrient load for plants .
“ It talks about lake management issues , one of which is all of these sediments continuing all of these nutrients . They talk about stormwater management as a wired way of dealing with issues , which is interesting from 40 years ago ,” Bachalis said .
Bachalis noted in the report

about three specific remedies : dredging , mechanical harvesting and lake spraying . Dredging would pose an issue as draining the lake would impact the animals on the lake while lake spraying is settled as the option due to it being the easiest and cheapest option . Bachalis suggested opening up a conversation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection ( NJDEP ) on the possibility of dredging the lake as it can lead to a resolution of lake issues for possibly decades .
For public communication , Bachalis wrote a column in The Gazette providing tips on what to do on the lake such as not running over fishing lines and not dumping trash on the street as it ends up on the sediment of the lake . McCullough discussed the idea of making the Lake Water Quality Facebook page into a Town of Hammonton Facebook page , creating and submitting content on behalf of the committee . There was discussion on a Hammontonians Organize a Positive Environment ( HOPE ) Facebook page , with the Lake Water and Green Committees and Environmental Commission providing updates through the Parks and Recreation Commission . A HOPE page under the Town of Hammonton website was also considered .
For stormwater line cleaning ,
Bachalis met with the Public Works and Transportation Committee ( PWTC ). PWTC has to prioritize cleaning the sanitary source lines and the new stormwater management guidelines from the state , requiring the town to map the stormwater lines . The sanitary source lines have been finished and are focusing on cleaning the stormwater lines , which could be completed in 12 months to their estimation , according to Bachalis .
Clean-Flo removal was also discussed with the PWTC in regards to removing the pipes . Minimizing nutrient release was also discussed by doing it later in the fall as well as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances ( PFAS ) testing on the lake , with councilman Steven Furgione suggesting the committee to contact NJDEP regarding PFAS testing as the committee wants to find out more about the traces being possibly found on the lake .
For the monthly Hammonton Lake activity , member John Keenan canoed around the lake a few hours before the meeting and found trash inside the lake , which he stated was not an issue on the lake water quality . Future monthly lake recaps will take place an hour before the monthly committee meetings at the Hammonton Canoe Club .
