HAMMONTON—The Hammonton Environmental Commission met on April 13 at town hall
for their monthly meeting. After
approving the minutes from their
meeting in March, members got
into their committee reports. Terri
Caruso-Cafiso gave a brief update
about the latest happenings with
parks and recreation.
“It looks like the parks are in
good shape. Little league started,
and it’s going smoothly. There are
several events coming up that are
using the bandstand. Kiwanis is
still going forward with the Fourth
of July events,” Caruso-Cafiso
said.
Following Caruso-Cafiso’s update on the parks, Amy Menzel
told members about the status of
the Green Committee.
“Since we last met, we had a
successful eye opening film lecture
series related to permaculture. It
was a lot of fun. Our cleanup on
April 9 was cancelled due to snow,
and we haven’t rescheduled yet …
We have a “Green Drinks” event
scheduled for May 5 at Three 3’s at
7 p.m. The Green Committee will
have a presence at ACUA’s Earth
Day on Sunday, April 24 … We’ve
been working really hard on our
Sustainable Jersey certification and
getting support from the town is
great. We have to resubmit our application in June. It looks like
we’re in good shape to be silver
certified again,” Menzel said.
She continued on to tell the
board about the ever-growing popularity of the community garden.
“We’ve doubled in size since last
year. We have 36 beds and now
have a waiting list. We have the
ability to continue to expand, but
we’re just getting everything set.
We’re scheduling speaker events
but don’t have anything locked in
yet, just some tentative dates for
monthly talks at the garden,” Menzel said.
The Green Committee has met
and exceeded their original goal of
collecting 500 pounds of plastic
bags. However, they are still collecting bags if residents have an
excess laying around at home.
