Stockton’s Kramer Hall hosts its largest MLK Day of Service Wednesday, January 29, 2020 • The Hammonton Gazette • Page 3 by Joseph F. Berenato G azette S taff W riter HaMMONtON—On January 20, Stockton University’s Kramer Hall, in conjunction with the school’s other campuses, held its annual MLK Day of Service. More than 60 people participated in the event in Hammonton. “this is definitely the biggest crowd we’ve ever had,” Kramer Hall Director Christina Birchler said. Stockton University president Dr. Harvey Kesselman addressed the volunteers via livestream from the main campus in Galloway twp. “formally designated as a na- tional day of service, the MLK holiday has served as a catalyst for a massive movement; a movement of everyday people from all walks of life that choose to get involved, tackle critical issues and formulate solutions that heal, build and strengthen our communities as well as each other. it is a move- ment that mimics the very spirit of Dr. King and that challenges us to become more other-centered rather than self-centered as artic- ulated by his youngest daughter, Bernice. it is a movement that unites us in our commitment to collectively meet those larger tan- gible and intangible needs of our society. it’s that movement that joins us together today,” Kessel- man said. Locally, there were five differ- ent events in which volunteers could participate: reusable bag- making, Valentine’s Day card- making, organizing supplies for the Noyes Museum of art of Stockton University, a clean-up at Hammonton Lake Park and CPr/aeD certification. Several local organizations were involved with the MLK Day of service. Bob Schenk, vice-pres- ident of Kiwanis Club of Ham- monton, explained that club’s involvement. “Kiwanis is here representing the Kiwanis Community Com- plex. Most of us are going to go out and help the volunteers coor- dinate a clean-up at the Hammon- ton Lake by the Kiwanis Pavilion.
