ting. although goals can be set at
any time of the year, something
about the turning over of the calendar seems to motivate people to
kick start themselves. that doesn’t
include everyone. Some people,
like Brett Passarella, don’t think
that a new year means setting specific goals is a necessity.
“i’m doing so many things
throughout the year that i’m always making changes. i have
goals set for myself that i’m always working towards. i don’t
necessarily need to make resolutions for myself, it makes me too
anxious to get to the end,” Passarella said.
Health and fitness goals are regularly some of the most common
resolutions. Matt Silvesti is the
owner of Solid fitness, located on
the White Horse Pike. Joining a
gym or fitness class is an excellent
way to improve your chances of
sticking to your resolution.
“Consistency, hard work and effective training are the best ways
to achieve your health goals. Get
fit fast or lose weight fast schemes
are often unhealthy and only work
short-term. Dedicate time to improve yourself,” Silvesti said.
“i used to make them all the
time. then, i stopped. i didn’t wait
till New Year’s to decide to lose 80
pounds. i walk six and a half miles
a day, sometimes double that. You
just have to do it. i think 90 percent of people that make resolutions are health related,” Joe
Berenato said.
“i have set them before and had
trouble, usually exercise and diet
stuff. this year, i’m very determined to stick to it for good. i
know i’m going to. i’ve already
lost 30 pounds from walking and
am joining the gym … Joe [Berenato] is actually who got me into
it,” Viola allen said.
Goal setting can be a great
thing. it can also come with a lot
of pressure. With this added pressure can come stress and a feeling
of guilt if you happen to slip up on
your plans.
“i don’t make them because i
feel like i’m going to jinx myself.
i make goals for myself every

Outside of health and fitness,
faith based resolutions are extremely common as well. Director
of Liturgy and Music at St. Mary
of Mt. Carmel Parish Lisa Neglia
sees each year as an opportunity
for people to rediscover their faith.
“i believe faith-based resolutions are a wonderful way to expand our horizons. they empower
us by making us aware we can
make a difference in other people’s
lives and that we are all on a spiritual journey based on faith and
love. as far as faith-based resolutions, one that is dear to me is to
reach out to friends and/or family
members that have slipped away
from attending church and invite
them back during the Christmas
season since we observe larger
than normal church crowds at
Christmas. i actually place an invitation in our bulletin to welcome
them back. another message i create is to challenge parishioners on
how they will offer their time, talent and treasures to Our Lord and
parish for the New Year. Both are
positive examples of faith-based
resolutions,” Neglia said.
