RESOLUTIONS , from Page 1 monton to see what lifestyle
amendments they have declared for 2017 and how they plan on achieving them .
Although many New Year ’ s Resolutions don ’ t materialize until about 11:30 p . m . on December 31 , when the liquor has been flowing for quite some time and everyone is caught up in the commotion of New Year ’ s Eve , many of the people of Hammonton give the idea some thought well-ahead of time .
For Hammonton resident Charles Lolio , 2016 was already quite the success , and 2017 will be reserved for building on it . Lolio recently lost more than 90 pounds through almost entirely strict dieting and has declared his 2017 New Year ’ s Resolution is to join a gym to bulk up after shedding so much weight .
“ My resolution for 2017 is to finally join a gym … It ’ s time to start building more muscle and be as healthy as I can manage ,” Lolio said .
Lolio said he wasn ’ t ” t someone who made a New Year ’ s Resolution in the past , but the newfound confidence his recent weight loss brought with it has opened the door for his 2017 decision .
“ I ’ ve never really made resolutions before , maybe a few . One was to somehow build self-esteem and self-confidence . Having somewhat achieved that , I believe it has helped me get to this point and current resolution ,” Lolio said .
Almost all of the people who responded to The Gazette ’ s inquiries alluded to health and wellness as their New Year ’ s Resolution . Fortunately for them , Hammonton has plenty of experienced and welltrained professionals who can offer pivotal guidance in these areas .
Elise Deming has been a registered dietitian nutritionist for the Hammonton ShopRite since July 2016 . In Deming ’ s line of work , she provides free nutrition counseling , community programming , cooking classes , recipe

makeovers , ShopRite store tours and more . Deming said she notices an uptick in the amount of people coming in for advice around January and believes it ’ s because of so many people making New Year ’ s Resolutions .
“ Once January hits , my client base increases a lot just because people are trying to make healthier decisions , lose the holiday pounds , all of that ,” Deming said .
Deming said drinking more water , eating more fruits and vegetables and listening to the body ’ s hunger signals are the three biggest tips she can give to clients who are trying to improve their dietary health . She also said her own New Year ’ s Resolution is to get back to the gym on a more regular basis .
Deming believes the best way to achieve a New Year ’ s Resolution is to hold oneself accountable in whatever way is best for them , which is what her plan is for finding the motivation to go to the gym despite the demands of her job .
“ To continue New Year ’ s Resolutions , find out what works for you , whether that ’ s using a tracking device on your phone to log all your food , have a friend that ’ s holding you accountable for it or come see me every couple of weeks and say , ‘ OK , Elise , I ’ m doing bad . What do I do ?’ Using someone that ’ s going to hold you accountable is a great way to do it ,” Deming said .
While some — like Lolio or Deming — use the new year as an opportunity to make a literal resolution , others use it as a philosophical fresh start ; an opportunity to reset one ’ s perspective , take the good with the bad and dictate their outlook for the coming year . This is exactly what Hammonton resident Amanda Umosella intends to do , every day , no matter what .
“ This year ’ s resolution is to appreciate each day for what it ’ s worth , whether it ’ s the best day ever or a day I wish I could hide under a rock ,” Umosella said .
Like Lolio , Umosella said she hasn ’ t set New Year ’ s resolutions in the past because she found them to be “ cliché ,” but this year , she has decided to try something different and put her best foot forward going into 2017 .
“ I plan on keeping that resolution by taking the good with the bad , being a forgiving person and , most importantly , instead of asking , ‘ why me ?’ tell myself , ‘ I can ’ You can do anything you set your mind to … This year , I am giving myself a fresh start and leaving the things that have happened in 2016 and years ’ prior in the past ,” Umosella said .
