Bottlers
Heartwood Malt Whisky, North Hobart
Heartwood is to Tasmania, as Gordon and MacPhail is
to Scotland in that they are both independent bottlers
who have done much to spread the love of malt whisky
to a far wider audience than might have been possible
had the task been left solely to the distillers. Tim Duckett
can take full credit for the foresight and initiative which
has led him to accumulate some 7000 L of maturing
whisky held in 200 and 300 L casks to be released as and
when he and his coterie of advisers think it fit for
consumption, but only to those he likes the look of! This
endeavour commenced in 1999 and all the earliest
whiskies have since been bottled, given imaginative
names, and no doubt consumed in their entirety. The
oldest whisky still maturing has 13 years to its credit
which makes it very senior in Tasmanian terms. Look
forward to more imaginative releases coming from a
variety of interesting barrel types.
Tasmanian Emu
Trapper’s Hut, Bruny Island
This is a small specialised business devoted to bottling
Sullivans Cove distilled in 1999-2000 at Tasmania
Distillery. The spirit was matured in 200L American Oak
Bourbon barrels. Only one barrel is released at a time
while the spirit in the remaining barrels continues to
mature. The first barrel (HH348) was released in 2008.
Barrels HH350, HH349, HH473 and HH067 have since
been released and all have sold out. The latest release is
Barrel HH070. The spirit in this barrel was distilled in
November 1999 and was bottled in December 2013.
Being 14 years in cask, it's the oldest Trapper’s Hut ever
released. A very focussed operation and, like the original
trapper’s hut, a place of relief to turn to when the regular
Sullivans Cove is out of stock!
