T he working students of Pollard meet every Thursday for Work Experience. The Work Experience Program helps students who work a minimum of 10 hours a week. These students are eligible to earn elective credits while in high school. The opportunity is open to all students regardless of what program they are in at LPHS. Students have to attend class once per week during homeroom, turn in assignment sheets, 6 time sheets equals 5 credits 12 time sheets equal 10 credits. They must turn in all mandatory paperwork and complete assigned work. Students must learn how to balance school work and work. “They are perpetually tired” says Mrs. Davis. Reaction: Some things students have learned were how to tie a tie, preparing for a successful interview, resume writing, and much more. These kind of skills help them prepare for future jobs and help keep the ones they have now. The students all like the program because it helps them all. The Work Experience Program has a positive impact on everyone who joins the program. “I love the program” says Nicholas Walsh a senior in the regular program. Mrs. Davis and the students discuss ways to deal with difficult schedules, how to deal with stress, setting goals and share out with one another in class. Also they discuss time management and the importance of sleep. This program is preparing the students to be ready when they go for other important jobs. It teaches them how to be safe and responsible while working. It also makes sure they are getting treated equally and not getting taking advantage of at their jobs. “I like it, it’s very interesting I’ve learned a lot and it gives kids like me a chance to graduate and learn responsibility”- Danny Baker senior in regular program. - Alyssa Andalon The Growler | 17
