taken from you, being teased, etc. Both boys and girls can
be bullied and be bullies. Research shows that there has
been a significant increase in bullying among girls between
the ages of 11- 14.
Very often teachers or parents are unaware that
bullying is taking place. Bullying most often occurs in the
playground or outside of the school premises on the way
to or from school. Children need to be taught to speak up
when they are being bullied and not try and deal with it on
their own. Adults need to learn to listen to children when
they say they are being bullied and take their feelings
seriously.
Each School Governing Body is responsible for
implementing a code of conduct in the school. This should
contain a bullying policy. Find out if your school has a
policy on bullying and what it entails. Learners should be
aware that the school does not tolerate bullying and know
the procedures to follow if a child is being bullied.

Sacred Heart College
Sacred Heart College traces its origins to the arrival of
two Marist Brothers in the mining town of Johannesburg
in 1889. Although they started teaching five pupils, within
ten years the school was 800 strong. Initially situated in
Koch Street in the centre of Johannesburg, the school
moved to the outskirts of town in Observatory in 1924.
The school remains on those premises. Sacred Heart
College is an Independent
School. It belongs to
the Marist Brothers, a
French order of Teaching
Brothers, founded by St
Marcellin Champagnat in
1817. They are one of five
Marist schools in South
Africa and the oldest of
the Johannesburg schools.
The Marist schools are
governed by the Marist
Schools Council and
each school has its own
Board of Governors and
Constitution.
The school consists of over 800 learners from Playgroup
to Matric. Sacred Heart College is the school of choice
for many families because of its co-educational nature; its
excellent academic record; its religious affiliation or so that
a child can remain on the same campus from Pre-School to
Matric.
Sacred Heart College has an excellent academic
record. Their children write the Independent Examination
Board exams and our Alumnus have won a number of
