Community comes together for Nelson Mandela Day
Rand Aid knits for Mandela
Ready, steady, knit!
Three Rand Aid
complexes celebrated
Mandela Day by s
eeing which complex
could knit the most
squares in the allotted
time. The Thornhill
Manor ladies were
clear winners –
having completed
2 631 squares before
the competition began
and 46 squares on the day, with some knitters making up to five squares in their 67
minutes. Knitters continued throughout the day and the final number of squares con-
tributed by Thornhill Manor was around 3 000.
On July 24, the squares from all three complexes – nearly 4 000 – were handed to
a representative from 67 Blankets for Mandela Day.
At the winning complex, Thornhill Manor, 44 ladies met in the community centre.
“You could feel the buzz and excitement of the morning and the eagerness to get
started,” says deputy complex manager Jackie Scott.
The event was overseen by the organiser of The Knit &
Knatter club, Joan Hepburn, who encouraged as many ladies
as possible to knit beforehand and to participate on the day.
The ladies also brought along some home-baked goods to
enjoy with tea afterwards.
“Well done, ladies. Hearty congratulations on a very
successful morning and the good deed of helping those
less fortunate and ensuring that more people keep warmer
this winter,” said Zabeth Zühlsdorff, Rand Aid’s GM Services
and Advance Division, after the event.
Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital cleans up the community
On Mandela Day this year, the Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital’s
‘clean up our community’ initiative saw the hospital staff, together with Alpha
Production, do a clean-up at the Pan Africa Taxi Rank in Alexandra.
Holy Rosary lends a hand
In the spirit of Nelson Mandela’s
birthday, on 18 July, it has become
a tradition for Holy Rosary Primary
School to make sandwiches for
the Khanyisa Soup Kitchen at the
Edenvale Methodist Church. Each
class was allocated a specific day to
make sandwiches and then deliv-
ered the sandwiches, with a choco-
late and a card wishing the recipient
a “Happy Mandela Day”.
Seen here (right) are some of the
Holy Rosary School Grade 5s

Holy Rosary Primary School also supported the ’67 Blankets
for Mandela Day’ initiative (above), and collected 115 scarves.
These scarves will be donated to those less fortunate at the
local Khanyisa Soup Kitchen.
Eden Meadows Shopping Centre
supports Caring4Girls
During the month of July, Eden Meadows Shopping
Centre held a project in collaboration with the Imbumba
Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Foundation to
honour the memory of Nelson Mandela. They collected
Sanitary Products for girls in rural communities who
don’t go to school during their monthly cycle, because
they cannot afford the necessary products. The project is
called Caring4Girls.
The centre collected two black bags full of Sanitary
Products during the last week of July and they would like
to thank you as the community for helping them to help
these girls climb one less mountain in their lives.
