The first thing I did when we arrived in our room was swing open the wooden shutters to let some light in. Outside our window was the most incredible view of Saint-Émilion’s Monolithic Church bell tower. Travelling with us, our friend Angela’s room had a view of the village rooftops overlooking the rolling green hills of the countryside. We joked that Joceline’s room was haunted, because the door of the armoire kept opening by itself!

After getting our luggage settled, we immediately set out to explore the village with just one night in the town, there was no time to waste.

Our first stop was the Collegiate Church and its cloister. I’ve visited many different churches and cathedrals throughout Europe, but the thing that stood out here was a large tree stump in the chapel, approximately 1.2 meters tall. It was covered with metal thumb tacks. We never did learn what it represented, but it was quite fascinating.
