Lunch at the hotel was divine – one of the best meals we’ve ever experienced in France. French country cooking at its finest. Founded in 1848, Logis de la Cadène is one of the oldest restaurants in Saint-Emilion. We enjoyed it so much, we came back that evening for dinner.

After lunch, we headed for the nearby countryside and a visit to Château Fonplégade to tour the winery.

We were fascinated by some of the newer innovations in winemaking, including some experimentation with concrete barrels which had ceramic walls. A tasting followed and we were hooked! Fortunately Château Fonplégade was one of the first French wineries to offer an American-style wine club and ship to the US.

If you go, take a walk in the vineyards and see the functioning fountain that has been in use since the days of the Roman Empire.
