ILIOKASTRO A semi-mountainous
settlement with around 550 inhabitants, built in
the foothills of the mountain range of Aderes,
at an altitude of 196 meters, and just 7 km away
from Ermioni. It was probably named after the
vineyards that produced particularly sweet wine
in the ancient times. Within short distance is
the fortress of Iliokastro, which was the border
of the declined Byzantine Empire with the area
of Trizinia ruled by the Venetians. Today, the
courtyard of the walls is preserved on the small
hill that served as the citadel of the village. The
square is a central spot, with the stone fountain
and the church of Apostles Peter and Paul,
where the visitors can enjoy local meats and
premium wine varieties at the taverns. The
olive oil is of exceptional quality and a basic
product in Iliokastro, as in the Plateau of Ilei, the
inhabitants grow olives and grapevines, while
the annual Wine Festival held in Iliokastro is an
important event for the wider area.
