One in five people living in the U.S in 2010 were foreign-born, which means they were born in a different country. Furthermore, nearly 75 million people in the U.S are part of the immigrant community. Immigration can affect the U.S in many different ways. Most foreign-born people tend to assimilate to American society and have positive impacts on the society, culture, and economy.

The curved line shows the ratio of foreign-born people to the total US population in each decennial census from 1850 to 2000 and the comparable figures for recent years from the American Community Survey. This graph shows the increasing number of immigrants that have been coming to the U.S throughout the years. In 2010, it was the peak of how many foreign-born people have immigrated to the U.S. From the 19th century to the 20th century, there was a mass rise in immigration, for which was known as the ‘Age of Mass Migration’.
