FINANCES
College Edition
It’s time to go back to school. If you’re like me,
you are dealing with a number of different
emotions and thoughts. Excitement?
Nervousness? Nausea? Don’t let your finances
be the cause of stress this coming year.
Save now, Splurge Later
This is the time in one’s life when you are investing in your future. And that investment can be
quite expensive. As a transfer student to Colorado State University, I’ve experienced the costs
associated with University life. Additionally, college is the type of place you constantly need
supplies, need to do last minute shopping, or just want to go out with friends. What is a money
savvy person to do if you want to spend, yet save for a little for later?
The following 8 budget tips have helped me save a few dollars while still taking care of my
needs/want list.
1. Create a Personalized Budget Sheet
I purposely put this as the number one budget tip. It is so much easier to budget as a college
student if you already have planned out your expenses. For example, by simply using an online
search engine, you can find a pre-made budget template. I love using my Excel budget sheet
because it is well organized.
Tip: Create a separate budget sheet for each paycheck/allowance.
2. Set Some Budget Goals
I really advocate “setting budget goals” because you won’t regret it. For example, we all want to
purchase things that are essential but also stylish. However, you may need to keep in mind the
expe nsive supplies you will need for your mid-term project that is coming up in a few weeks.
Defining your priorities means making needs first and wants second.
3. Get an On-Campus Job
I made this one specifically about on-campus jobs because of their flexibility. As a college
student, you might want to focus primarily on studies, and having the time of your life. But for some,
working a job around your class schedule can provide much needed extra money in our pockets. I
recommend working an on-campus job because I have found they are more understanding
about academic related reasons why one is late or may need to change your hours.
4. “Stay In” Dates
College is a place that can make you feel pressured to date and find a significant other.
Instead of always going out with your sweetie, Find fun things to do that are free that you can
enjoy at his place or yours. Alternatives like a cuddle session or cooking for each other, rather than
going out, can allow you to save some needed cash. Additionally, while you are privately
bonding, take the time to have a private study session or two?
