A PLACE TO LEARN BY DOING
The Gathering Ground will be a living classroom, working conservation laboratory, and cultural gathering place where visitors of all ages can learn through experience. A variety of programs will provide visitors with opportunities to explore local culture, discover native plants and wildlife, learn how rain gardens and living shorelines protect the landscape, join conservation walks and creative workshops, take part in hands-on activities, and much more— all designed to build knowledge, curiosity, and a lasting connection to the natural world.
ROOTED IN CONSERVATION. CREATED FOR COMMUNITY.
The first phase of The Gathering Ground is underway, with a public opening planned for Summer 2027. This initial phase will bring the vision of the preserve to life through the opening of the trail system, Artisan Pavilion, and education and conservation programming. Visitors will be able to explore the landscape, learn about native plants and wildlife, engage with Gullah Geechee artisans and local culture, and take part in handson activities that demonstrate restoration, stewardship, and nature-based solutions. As The Gathering Ground continues to grow, additional features and programs will expand opportunities for learning, research, conservation, and community connection.
Conservancy of the Sea Islands is an accredited land trust and leader in science-based education, environmental restoration, and conservation across Johns, Kiawah, and Seabrook Islands. We have protected thousands of acres across our Sea Islands.
The Gathering Ground brings that work to life in a new way— creating a place where wildlife, native habitats, cultural traditions, and people can connect, coexist, and learn from the natural world for generations to come.
