A LIVING LANDSCAPE FOR CONSERVATION, CULTURE, AND LEARNING
The Gathering Ground will transform 100 acres of protected land along Betsy Kerrison Parkway into a vibrant, publicly accessible nature preserve— where people can experience the Lowcountry landscape, learn through hands-on conservation, and connect with the cultural traditions rooted in these Sea Islands.

Nature Trails & Native Landscapes
Two miles of ADA-accessible trails will invite visitors to slow down and experience the landscape up close— moving through wildflower meadows and maritime forests to hummock islands and expansive marsh views. Interpretive signage and outdoor classrooms will share the stories of native plants, wildlife, regional history, and local culture.
Sweetgrass Meadows & Cultural Plantings
Native sweetgrass will be cultivated alongside the other natural materials traditionally used in Gullah Geechee sweetgrass artistry— including longleaf pine, black needlerush, wiregrass, and palmetto palm fronds. Together, these plantings will help provide artisans with reliable access to the materials essential to sustaining this centuries-old tradition.
Pollinator & Rain Gardens
Native trees, shrubs, grasses, and flowers will be planted throughout the preserve, including vibrant pollinator gardens and rain gardens. These living landscapes will support bees, butterflies, birds, and other wildlife while demonstrating how native plants can manage stormwater, improve water quality, and build resilience.
Longleaf Pine Grove
A dedicated grove will restore native longleaf pine to the landscape, creating habitat for a variety of wildlife species. The grove will also provide pine needles traditionally used by Gullah Geechee sweetgrass artisans.
