Student Stories Grey College Trust Awards 2018 Grey College Trust Awards Each year the Grey College Trust supports students in their endeavors Supporting our students to undertake extra-curricular activities outside their studies has always been a part of the work of the College Trust. However, in recent times this has become an increased focus, as we seek to make Grey a place where every student has the chance for a remarkable and transformational education, learning and growing in ways that just an ordinary classroom experience cannot provide. Our aim is to be able to regularly provide £20,000 annually towards awards, a four-fold increase on our current position. Alumni and friends of the College interested in supporting this can contact the Vice-Master, Dr Peter Swift at [email protected] for more information. During the 2017-18 academic year, the Grey College Trust supported a number of our students who un- dertook the following projects. A publication of students; full reports is being prepared as well and will be available from the College. University Debating Championships DUCK Peru Expedition Charlotte Daintith: Having worked with children before I hoped this DUCK expedition would be an amazing opportunity to help children from a wholly different background to my own, and expose myself to the variety of cultures out there. I had no idea what a personal impact the ex- perience would have on me and my fellow team members from Durham University. Coco Colard: The kind donation that Grey College Trust made towards my travel costs allowed me to compete at the European Universities Debating Champion- ships in Novi Sad, Serbia. I repre- sented the Durham Union Society as a member of the 'B' debating team, and spoke in nine rounds of British Parliamentary debat- ing, on topics including artificial intelligence and governments in postcolonial Africa. DUCK Tanzania Expedition Helena Taxy: In July 2018 I went on an expedition to Tanzania with the help of The Grey College Trust. In a team with nine other Durham students I challenged myself to fundraise, climb Mount Kilimanjaro, explore new regions and learn about new cultures. It was an invaluable experience and I would encourage anyone to un- dertake a project of this sort. 15
