5. SILENCING LIES
I think by now the message I’m trying to spread is obvious – that depression is a season of temporary
weakness caused by deception which begins in the mind.
Depression is built on lies. Lies about our identity. Lies about our worth. Lies about our purpose.
These are some of the areas that come to mind when I consider the lies that depression feeds us.
These lies come in subtle forms. We begin to doubt ourselves or who we are. We begin to doubt our rele-
vance and importance. These lies come in many forms. Sometimes we just find ourselves asking “Who
Am I?”, “Why was I born?”, “What was I born for?”, “Why am I here?”, Am I relevant?”, “Does my opin-
ion matter” and many other variants of these questions.
All of us have asked one or more of these questions at one time or the other and it’s all right, sometimes
they lead to helpful periods of self-evaluation but most times they lead us down the road of sadness.
Before I go on and advise on how to counter these lies, it’s important to bring a verse of scripture here.
2 Cor 10:5 in the NIV says,
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we
take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
The Message will say,
“We can demolish every deceptive fantasy that opposes God and break-through every arrogant attitude
that is raised up in defiance of the true knowledge of God. We capture, like prisoners of war, every
thought and insist that it bow in obedience to the Anointed One.”
The way we silence the lies of depression is by demolishing them. We fish them out one by one and
scatter them. We take them in one hand, and take the true words of God on the other hand, then use the
word of God and use it as a hammer to smash the lies. Then we force the voice of truth into our minds.
To the questions on identity like “Who am I?”, we reply I am a child of God made in his image created to
do wonders and bring him glory. I am a child of purpose unconditionally (even when I fall) loved by God so
much that he sent his one and only son to die for me. Genesis 1:26, 29. John 3:16, Romans 8:2, John
1:12, Jeremiah 31:3, 1 John 3:1, John 15:13.
