The word of God is the weapon we wield against depression and sadness. The word of God is so powerful,
the bible in Hebrews calls it a Double-Edged sword. You have to remind yourself of the promises of God
and the truths in his word and as you confess his word – the forces of darkness flee. Make no mistake – I
didn’t say the bible is a manual of magic words that we declare once and the enemy flees. No, it is a war
so don’t expect that you will shoot one bullet and the enemy will stop shooting – we are fighting powers
and principalities. You have to keep reminding yourself what God says about you and say it out so even
the enemy hears and eventually, the devil will flee!
One very helpful way of doing this that I have discovered is through music. , literally been with me in the
pit and lifted my eyes up. At the end of this mini-book, I will do a little glossary of songs that help me
through various circumstances. Music is such a powerful weapon.
Finally, Prayer is key. When the thoughts begin to possess your mind – pray. Before they do, pray. When
you notice a sequence or pattern or triggers being set off, pray. Ask Jesus to set your gaze right. There’s
an old hymn I cherish. The lyrics say,
‘Turn Your eyes upon Jesus.
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim.
In the light of his glory and grace’
