Tread softly because you tread on my dreams
T
UELC was started, in 2005, from scratch
and I became its founding Director. The
memory of those days is still green. I was
young, energetic and had returned from Melbourne University after earning a doctoral hat
from my alma meter. Those were the moments
of courage and tenaciousness to surmount Himalayas. Albeit, it was an uphill task but I and my
team were never desperate and we continued
our journey against all odds. To quote Shannon L.
Alder “Gratitude was never meant to be an excuse for giving up on the obstacles God has put
before you. Some of the most magical things he
can bring us require faith and a lot of planning.” It was, no doubt, a collaborative effort
that paid at the end. In the beginning, we had no
prescribed syllabi as you know Teaching English
as a Foreign Language is a technical discipline
and it demands dedicated and professional
teachers. As for syllabi, our colleague Mr. Simon
(alas! he left us but ELC will always remember his
services to the department) was all there to take
the responsibility of the curriculum, who did a
wondrous job to equip teachers with the material; required to cover the four skills. At last, after
a great work, in 2010, ELC had its own syllabi
that contain lessons on communication skills:
listening, speaking, writing and reading. Let me
admit I have been a lucky person on earth who
always had had very cooperative and dedicated
teachers. They with all their skills and knack of
teaching English as Foreign Language left no
stone unturned to make TUELC a shining star in
the constellation of the Taif University. Now, ELC
caters almost 22 thousand university students.
Along with the regular classes ELC runs successfully the Intensive Courses in the evening and
last but not the least ELC recently started IELTS
and CELTA classes to contribute to the community service and to contribute for the welfare of
the country. I am grateful to the administration
of Taif University, the past and the present, to
help ELC out and to grant favors to upgrade the
Academic Culture of the department. When I see
our past students well placed in the society it
gives me an immense pleasure to find myself in
the list of those persons who to their worth and
capacity were helpful for the betterment of the
society. I think that’s what you want to be. I built
it with my hands and now, leave to the coming
administration to take care of my brain child.
My best wish!
