Mayor of Felixstowe for 2018/19 elected
At its Annual Meeting of 17th May,
Felixstowe Town Council elected
Councillor Graham Newman as the
Mayor of Felixstowe for the Municipal
Year 2018/19. On the same evening
Cllr Tracey Green was appointed as the
Deputy Mayor.
On accepting the offi ce of Mayor,
Cllr Graham Newman, who has been
Member of the Town Council since
2009, said:
“I am humbled and privileged to have
been elected by my fellow councillors
to serve a second term as Mayor for
this coming Civic Year, 2018/19. I am
also delighted that my colleague Cllr
Tracey Green – an established Town &
District Councillor - has been elected
Deputy Mayor.
Having said that, I know I am stepping
into huge boots left by my predecessor,
Cllr Nick Barber, who has done a
fantastic job over the past year -
representing Felixsto we all over the
County and beyond - and raising a
huge amount of money for his three
charities.
So yes, 2018/19 will be a different type
of mayoral year but I hope one which
consolidates and builds upon the many
aspects of our Town’s growing success.
Equally I want to focus on supporting
those who have yet to be touched
by that success - for instance those
facing the challenges daily such as
New Council becomes
law as Orders are made
Signed, sealed and delivered: a
new Council for east Suffolk WILL
be created in April 2019. Today,
Parliament has made the Orders
required to create the new East Suffolk
Council and they become law today.
Under the Orders, the East Suffolk
Council will come into existence on 1
April 2019, when both Suffolk Coastal
District Council and Waveney District
Council will be abolished. Prior to
that, from tomorrow, the Orders now
create a Shadow Authority, formed
of all 90 Members who represent the
existing Councils. Its role is to oversee
the creation of the new Council and
ensure a smooth transition to the new
Council, with seamless delivery of the
services which are provided now.
The Shadow Authority will meet for
the fi rst time at 7.00pm on Monday 4
June 2018, at High Lodge, Darsham.
Meanwhile, in the lead up to the
Council’s creation, a range of offi cer
and member working groups will
continue their work, before the new
Council comes into being on 1st April
2019. Elections to it will then be held
on 2nd May 2019.
Cllr Ray Herring, Leader of Suffolk
Coastal District Council said:
“This historic confi rmation is the
culmination of a great deal of hard
work by members and offi cers;
however this work does not simply
stop now. We will continue to maintain
our focus on this next stage of the
loneliness and/or “where is the next £
coming from”. To that end, I will be
supporting two charities that make it
their business to help... The Laydens
Community Café in Langley Avenue
and The BASIC Life Charity.
As we commemorate 100 years of
cessation of World War 1’s hostilities,
there will be an intensive programme
of events in the town over the
fortnight leading up to Remembrance
Sunday. Many of these activities will
be facilitated by the Town Council
itself, so watch out for further details
over the next few months. Added to
that, we have a growing programme
of events throughout the summer
season for the whole town to enjoy as
hopefully we welcome thousands of
visitors.”

journey, ensuring that the transition
from two councils to one council is as
smooth as possible.”
Cllr Mark Bee, Leader of Waveney
District Council said:
“It speaks volumes for the incredible
efforts of members and offi cers that
this fi nal confi rmation has been
achieved with the minimum of fuss;
setting an historic template for others
to follow. We now enter an exciting
new phase as the clock ticks down to
the creation of East Suffolk Council”.
The two councils have been working
on the Business Case for creating
the East Suffolk Council since a
simultaneous Cabinet meeting in
March 2016 fi rst examined the
proposals drawn up by the joint Senior
Management Team (SMT).
Both Councils voted to create the new
Council in January 2017 and a full
business case for the proposal was
submitted to the Secretary of State
for the (then named) Department of
Communities and Local Government
a month later. Ministerial and
Parliamentary approval was confi rmed
earlier this year.
The decision to create the East Suffolk
Council will see the creation of the
largest district area in the country, of
487.2 sq miles (1,261.9 km2). The East
Suffolk Council will serve a quarter of
a million residents and deliver over 80
different services.
