Felixstowe Liberal Democrats Colneis Flower Club

A Housing policy for all
Having a home is a basic human need , as well as a human right . With our chronic national housing shortage , millions of people across the country ( primarily young people ) are unable to achieve that right . The private sector alone cannot be relied upon to deliver affordable houses for those struggling to get on the housing ladder .
Social housing is one of the pillars of our welfare state . It is a vital safety net for hundreds of thousands of families who cannot afford to rent privately , let alone ever buy their own home .
A package of housing policies addressing this situation was adopted at the Liberal Democrat conference in March . These will enable local authorities to build more affordable and social housing . This includes greater access to borrowing for local authorities , strengthened powers to bring empty homes back into use and the power to direct the use of newly-available publicly-owned land .
Another Lib Dem measure allows local authorities to abandon ‘ Right to Buy ’ if local need dictates . We also propose that all profit from council house sales be invested in new social housing .
The Tories seem happy to let social housing die . Their ideology is all about private ownership , not seeing a need for social housing at all – this is hardly surprising when you realise a major proportion of political donations to the Conservatives come from large private building companies .
Lib Dems are the only party empowering local councils and communities to provide the required scale of affordable housing .
Lib Dems make major gains in local elections
In May ’ s local elections , Liberal Democrats gained control of 4 councils ( including a huge swing from the Tories in South Cambs ) and lost none – the only party not to lose control of any councils . We take heart from these successes and will work hard to gain councillors in our next local polls , for both Town and District , in May 2019 - to bring better balance and new energy to our local councils .
Lib Dem Leader , Sir Vince Cable , coming to Felixstowe !
We ’ re very excited at the news that our national leader , Sir Vince Cable , will be at the excellent Felixstowe Book Festival on 30th June . Vince is presenting his new book and has also found time to meet with local party members and supporters – a day we ’ re all looking forward to !
Who would have thought covering an orchid tube with ribbon and a yoghurt pot with wired ribbon would have caused so much hilarity ? Well that is what happened at our members meeting when we celebrated the forthcoming marriage of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle . The intention was to make small hand held posies and although all the participants were given the same materials , as usual , they all looked different but very pretty . It was good fun and the cupcakes decorated with sugar paste flowers and glasses of fruit cup ended the evening in style .
We are also looking forward to making arrangements for the Ely Cathedral ’ s Kaleidoscope of Life Flower Festival

For part of our arrangement , we are privileged to be given a new rose which will be previewed at Chelsea Flower Show . It will be an exciting event visited by hundreds of people .
