“His caravan park was under
threat of the North Sea through
coastal erosion. He wanted to
buy 80 acres as he was looking
at a rollback scheme to move
back inland. That’s when we
came to the 900-acre Manor
Farm in Burton Pidsea and it
effectively doubled our acreage.
We increased our potato acreage
as our relationship with McCain’s
grew stronger, got rid of the
onions and the pig herd as there
was no facility for them here and
moved closer to what we are
today.
“In 2008 we expanded again
when we purchased 400 acres
at Catwick, where I now live,
14 miles away from the main
holding here at Burton Pidsea.
We’ve also subsequently bought
more land around here to take
us to 2,500 acres. It’s always
been a real family effort and not
only close family but cousins
too. My uncle Charlie has helped
massively over the years.”
Ensuring adequate drainage
of land is a major task in
Holderness. The drains are as
much a part of agricultural life as
the land itself and both Jack and
Andrew are heavily involved in
Holderness drainage schemes.
They run a dredging boat to
assist in clearing the waterways
leading to the River Humber,
notably the Keyingham Drain,
and go out into the Humber
too.
