He also helps out in The Frying Farmer and is fast becoming my personal PA making sure I say the right things!” Jack started out farming in his own right at Waxholme in 1962 when he bought the 85 acre Cliff Farm where he proceeded to run an arable and pigs enterprise. He moved to Tunstall in 1970 when buying another Cliff Farm. Jack then bought Andrew’s grandfather’s Hall Farm at Tunstall around the same time. By the early 1980s Jack had gathered together 320 acres with other purchases in Hilston and Tunstall. “We were quite heavily into pigs and cattle at that time. We had a 300-sow herd of Landrace X Large White sows with everything going to bacon; and we were running a beef fattening unit bringing Holstein X calves in from Cumbria to finish. We’d bring in 150-head at a time. We came out of cattle in the mid-90s.” By the end of the 90s having purchased a further 300 acres at Hilston and another 140 acres at Roos - Jack and Andrew were farming up to 800 acres. “During that time we had been growing cereals and vegetable crops including sprouts, cauliflowers and onions. Our potato crop was only about 20 acres and it was only in the late 90s that we started increasing it after the bottom fell out of the frozen market for cauliflowers. It was then that we started focussing on onions and potatoes.” The catalyst for the increased acreage today came when Jack and Andrew were approached by Tony Ellis of Sand le Mere Caravan Park to purchase their land next to his.
