Farm News First year celebrations for Power Cleaning Systems »»THE FIRST YEAR IN ANY NEW business can be fraught with uncertainties but Malton-based Power Cleaning Systems recently passed its first anniversary in an energetic, positive and optimistic mood. Owner James Grice set up the business in September 2015, fulfilling a long held ambition after a decade gaining valuable experience working for a supplier in a similar line of work, which is all about servicing and repairing essential power cleaning equipment. Hygiene is a crucial element not only in farming but also in all food manufacture/processing environments and that is where this company’s expertise lies, in ensuring that animal pens, machines and equipment can be cleaned and maintained to the highest standards – keeping them clean, disease free and operating efficiently all year round. Farming machinery is not cheap and no farmer wants an expensive piece of kit out of action at any time – it is a sheer waste of money. The value of such expensive and complex machinery needs to be taken into account: proper cleanliness and servicing will help maintain its value far longer than equipment that is allowed to deteriorate. James (29) was fully aware that launching a new business providing essential services to farmers and the broader agricultural sector posed a certain amount of risk, but he had several advantages that stood him in good stead at the start and continue to do so today. “I grew up on a farm – my father and his family were originally in dairy farming on a hill farm, latterly my father worked as a shepherd near Malton,” he explained. “So I speak the same language as my customers and do understand their concerns and requirements. A decade working in the cleaning equipment industry also meant I had acquired experience and knowledge that is proving useful.” The business repairs and services all makes and models of industrial cleaning equipment but in addition can source equipment for customers – and always at the right price. “We have the advantage of knowing all makes and models of equipment well so are in a position to advise on the best kit for the job,” he said. James, who is married with a young son and daughter, admitted that business was just “steady” for the first few months but then as word spread about the quality and reliability of the services the business offered, things got much busier and it wasn’t long before he was able to expand the territory covered. “Initially, we looked at covering a radius of 30-40 miles from our Malton base,” he said, 16 Oct/Nov 2016 www.farmers-mart.co.uk “but now I am pleased to say that we are able to cover the whole of Yorkshire. Thanks to Farmers Mart, our most recent new customers are based in the south of the county, in Sheffield, and from there word is already spreading, so we are fairly confident that more business will come our way. “Again, because of my own background and interest in farming, I always take into account the need to keep costs affordable and competitive. Farmers (especially in Yorkshire!) like to get good value for money and that is what we always try our best to provide. We also understand that farming is not a 9-5 operation which is why we offer an affordable 24/7 service. We listen always to customer feedback and tailor our service to their needs.” If you would like to know more about what Power Cleaning Systems can do for you, call James on 01653 699 262 or email to: james@ powercleaningsystems.co.uk TOP TIPS AS WINTER APPROACHES… James has this timely advice to offer as we move towards winter: “With the colder weather approaching it is always worth remembering that your pressure washing equipment can be damaged by frost, so a couple of tips to keep your equipment safe and avoid costly repairs..” • When you have finished using your pressure washer, disconnect all the hoses and run the motor until all the water is expelled from the unit. • Always try to store your pressure washer inside a warm building - not out in the frost. • Keep our number to hand (01653 699 262). If all else fails and your machine does get damaged by frost, call our friendly engineers who will quickly get you up and running again.
