‘ Nicola and our full-time chef Gina run the tearoom superbly and we’ ve built up the trade so much that this year will see the opening of a brand new, purpose-built 60ft x 20ft tearoom,’ says Ash.‘ It will no longer be in the ground floor of our house.’
‘ We will also have a fantastic new luxury holiday flat to let, complete with hot tub, as well as the shepherd’ s hut – and we’ ve just taken on further acreage for the farm.’
Ash is particularly proud of their charity work, which includes having given over half an acre to allotments for war veterans and hosting charity events in the barn at no hire charge.
‘ It’ s about giving something back. The First Light Trust organised in Scarborough by estate agent Sue Tipple, sees war veterans of all ages grow salad plants and vegetables on the allotment land which are sold in their charity shop in Scarborough and which we also use in the tearoom. They are here every Tuesday morning and Sue looks after them. They are all ex-Forces ranging from their 30s – 70s.’
‘ During the pandemic we have also helped supply meat and vegetable packs to those who have been struggling.’
Ash and Nicola have three children – Kye( 24), Kaitlyn( 22) and Isabella( 14) – who, together with son-in-law-to-be Rob all loved having the celebs on their farm, as did his dad John.
‘ Dad loved it and they loved him. I became Farmer Ash and dad became Farmer John. It was a great show to be part of and who knows, we might get chance to host it again!’
