HOME FARM 65
• FEB/MAR 2020
I can personally vouch for all of
Richard and Lucy’s meat from The
Horny Cow as I’ve tried their beef, pork
and lamb. The lamb comes from their
flock of Welsh Badgerfaced. Sophie has
the flock of 40-50 ewes and also a few
Kerry Hills and Jacobs, fitting in again
with the rare and native breed ethos.
Her granddad Ken, Richard’s dad, helps
her look after them, but at lambing
time Sophie is very much hands-on.
One batch of 25 was lambed in January
as Sophie is also keen on showing.
The others are due to lamb in March.
The pigs are currently Tamworths and
Gloucester Old Spots providing succu-
lent pork.
‘Pork is proving really popular,’ says
Lucy. ‘The pigs had set off as a bit of a
hobby when Richard came back with
them from a rare breeds sale.

HISTORY
Richard is a third generation
farmer at Wilton. His granddad
Hilton – known as ‘Hilton from
Wilton’ came to the village in the
mid-1940s as a tenant farmer.
Richard’s dad Ken and Ken’s
brother Barry then took it on
and bought the farm from Wilton
Estate in 1981. Barry subsequently
retired. It had been a 120-cow
dairy farm up until the change
to beef fattening as there wasn’t
sufficient land around the farm
to graze the herd on an evening.
Ken has now retired from the
farm but remains a partner in the
business.
Ken’s father had the Bay Horse
pub in Green Hammerton in
wartime and then moved to
Tockwith, where Ken was born.
‘ Richard would
rather be on a tractor
somewhere or trying to
get out of the door to get
to a livestock market
’
Richard and Lucy’s son Jack (16) is
currently undertaking an apprenticeship
with Askham Bryan College. He’s back
home on the farm at present as Richard
has suffered with back problems affect-
ing his spinal chord.
Lucy was previously a dental nurse
until around 21 months ago and gave
up to be around at home more. That’s
another reason why the shop has come
about.
‘Richard would rather be on a tractor
somewhere or trying to get out of the
door to get to a livestock market, so I
gave up the other job and it’s working
out really well. The Horny Cow is doing
well. We’re still in the early stages but
we’ve been pleased with the reaction so
far and we are noticing a lot of engage-
ment on the website and Facebook
page. Our relationship with Farmison
Northern Nutrition are proud
to supply the Lunn family.
“TYRES MALTON”
is very good. We also get on great with
Martin at McIntyre Meats who kills oyt
our beef animals.’
Wykeham Farmers Market has been
another addition to their roster and
the couple have plans to go again this
spring. The Horny Cow has also been
nominated in the Rural Oscars! So watch
this space.
