“I’d like to
increase the herd
to 60 suckler cows but in order
to do that we need to try and find
more land,” says James. “That’s
a problem around here. We also
have a flock of 150 Texel X Mule
breeding ewes that we’ve built
up by buying shearlings from
Skipton and Holmfirth livestock
markets. We’ve only been in
sheep for the past three years.
We’re a closed flock since last
year. We lamb at the beginning
of March and last year we sent

store lambs to local butchers
and Brosters Farm Shop. Our fat
lambs go to Holmfirth.”
The Townend family includes
John and his wife, Jennifer who
was born in the nearby village of
Golcar; daughter Sarah who is a
nursery nurse; Jonathan’s wife,
Hannah who runs a hairdressing
business. They have two
children, Eric and George; and
then there’s James. Jonathan
is also keen to get a mention of
Hannah’s horse – a two year old
Red Friesian.
John tells of one of the
Townends’ most bizarre partexchanges for farm machinery,

although they’re not in a hurry
to repeat it.
“We even took three in-calf
heifers last summer. The farmer
we were dealing with couldn’t
resist part-exchanging something
and that’s all he had available!”
