We now have store lambs that we bring on to do a job for us of tidying up the land by eating the grass . They ’ re all Texel X and we sell them at Skipton . I ’ d had Mules when I started in 1993 . I used to put the Suffolk tup to them .’
‘ Our land is very good meadow land , all down to grass and because we get a lot of rain it ’ s a very short grazing year 1000ft up here . Our cattle are a late turnout and in early because the weather can soon turn .
The other livestock operation provides one of the two items that Andrew sells from Tarn View Farm Shop – eggs .
‘ We have 550-600 free range hens that provide free range eggs for our local customers who trundle up here every day at 4 o ’ clock to buy eggs and milk . It ’ s not so much a farm shop as a shed , a garden shed . We also sell the eggs on the milk round . We get a lot of local trade from Steeton , Keighley and the surrounding area and it is hectic with everyone queuing down the lane and in our drive . I dare say we could do with a roundabout in our driveway but everyone just gets on .’
‘ During the first Lockdown we didn ’ t even have people down the drive , we simply passed the milk and eggs over the farm wall and people gave us their cash . That ’ s what we are , all cash . I don ’ t do modern . I leave that to my wife Jane who updates our social media .’
‘ I like to see our customers and I think they appreciate that . Our bottles are all marked up with Tarn View on them too , so people know who they are dealing with . During these past eight months we ’ ve seen a loss on our town centre milk trade in Bradford where staff were furloughed and businesses shut down , but our farm gate trade has increased and that increase has remained .’
Jane , who was an NHS nurse , works in private health care and they have a 15-year old son Ben and 12-year old daughter Molly . Andrew has plans for a possible next move into the holiday accommodation sector . You can bet he ’ ll be just as competitive in setting that up too .
