Laurel Farm playing around 7-8 years ago . It reawakened my interest but I soon decided that a 6-string was far too many strings for me and so I went back to my roots with the bass .’
Charlie found out there was a weekly jam session at one of his local pubs The Coach & Horses in Welwick and the Welli-Skeff Mountain Trio was born including cousin Rich .
‘ I was probably the least proficient musician in the pub at the time but who cares . It was a start . At first we had no drummer but then Paul joined us and we became The Pub Lads after one local lad Eric Billany said we should call ourselves the name since we ’ d come together in the pub .’
‘ We don ’ t go out playing for money for ourselves . We play for pubs and private functions and the two provisos , or riders if we ’ re being rock ‘ n ’ roll , are that the pub or party organisers keep our glasses filled , or in my case ply me with mugs of tea , and that we receive a minimum donation of £ 100 for Cancer Research UK . Most give us more and we take nothing out of it ourselves . I ’ ve a van so I cart all the gear around and we play all over South Holderness . We don ’ t travel far but we have played some really nice gigs including this past year the Great Newsome Beer Festival . One of our early gigs in 2017 will be at The Black Horse pub in Roos owned by agricultural engineer Paul Kitchen .’
